Student Biographies:
Joshua Orio, not to be confused with Oreo- his favorite cookie, hails from
Ballagio, Lake Como, Italy. He is a fifteen-year-old sophomore who is a globe trotter and is looking forward to his Chile Winterim. Joshua’s primary goal is to use his taste buds when it comes to expanding his knowledge of Chilean food. He is dying to try empanadas, Pastel de Choclo and of course some Churros with hopefully a spicy chocolate sauce (we are in Chile of course). Joshua's focus on the trip (for his final project) will be on Chilean foods, which means he will have to try everything! This might be a hardship but he says that he is up for the task and will do so with herculean effort to ensure a great grade! |
Baird Atwood is a star in the making. Now a senior at Forman, Baird hails from
the great city of Pittsburgh PA. Baird is excited to participate in his third winterim- his second one focused on music. He has gained critical fame on the Forman campus as a member of the music ensemble. A regular at Open Mic Nights, Baird usually performs as a drummer or pianist, however, on occasion he will break out the Uke. His focus on this winterim is to understand and record music down in Chile with his musical partner in crime, Henry Lautch. |
Juan Zapata is a seventeen-year-old junior at the Forman School. Juan hails from
the Dominican Republic and is excited to travel to Chile because he has never been to any South American country. He wants to focus on learning about a new culture but is comfortable with Chile because he already knows the language. Juan plans to be the group's official translator and has been asking all members of the winterim if they have been practicing their Spanish. Since the answer has been “no” Juan knows he has his work cut out for him. |
Harrison Day is from Stamford, Connecticut and is a sophomore at the Forman
School. This is Harrison’s first year at Forman and his first Winterim. Harrison enjoys listening to music and playing sports. While Harrison is in Chile, he wants to learn more about everything. Harrison is a curious guy by nature and is not familiar with Chilean food, art, music, or history, so he wants to learn as much as he can. |
Henry Lautch is an eighteen year-old senior at Forman. Growing up in Seattle, the
Folklife music festival was always a highlight of his year. He developed a passion for learning about new cultures he has become increasingly fascinated by world music and is excited to go to Chile and experience the Chilean music scene in Valparaiso and Santiago upfront and personal. Personally Henry has progressed as a musician playing both the trumpet and guitar. He also writes music, which means that he hopes this experience can enhance his work and viewpoint. Alongside Baird Atwood, Henry will be studying the musical styles as well as lifestyles of local artists in the hopes of achieving a more complete knowledge of Chilean Culture. |
Owen Takacs is a 15 year old Freshman from San Francisco, California. He is
going on the Chile winterim trip with Mr. Cattey and Ms. Fenton. Owen is excited to learn about the culture and history of Chile. Owen loves music and he is excited to hear many live performances even though he does not play any instruments. Owen loves traveling and exploring new places. He has travelled to a plethora of places but never South America. Owen loves trying ethnic foods, but he has never tried Chilean food. Owen is excited for the trip and can’t wait for what’s ahead. |
CeCe Sherrill is a 15 year old freshman from Atlanta, Georgia. She is currently a
boarder at The Forman School. She is going on her first Winterim to Chile with Mr. Cattey and Ms. Fenton. It is a music trip and the only music that CeCe has ever had experience with is playing guitar in 6th grade (where she only memorized one song, “Free Falling” by Tom Petty) and occasionally singing in the shower. While she is in Chile, she is hoping to take extraordinary pictures on her Canon camera. She is also considering coming out of her musical hiatus and picking up a guitar again and maybe, just maybe, learning a song or two. |
Sophia Lobkowicz is from New York City and is a currently a
sophomore at The Forman School. She is interested in animals and music. Although she cannot play instruments and can’t sing all that well, she continues to try, and loves music. She used to be able to play the violin and piano but hasn’t played in a few years. She studied violin at Sacred Heart in New York City but hasn’t played since the sixth grade. She tried taking dance lessons from Beyonce’s choreographer and loved it but wasn’t so good at it. For about 7 years she took voice lessons but stopped when she got older and realized it just wasn’t for her even though her parents said she was getting somewhere. Hopefully this trip to Chile will open her eyes and get her back into being more musical. |
Pedro Farach is a junior at the Forman School from the Dominican Republic. He is
known all over the world and on campus as Pepe- a nickname he earned as a baby and is considering an official name change when he gets older. Pepe is looking forward to seeing a South American city because in the Dominican, the largest building is only 40 stories high and it’s an island dominated by beaches and shared with Haiti- a vastly different culture. Pepe is fascinated by the differences in the land and the culture. He is curious about the weather differences between his home and Chile. As it is very, very warm in the DR but in Chile it is a bit cooler. He'll see what he has when he arrives. |
John McPhee grew up in Bristol, CT. John is a fan of music and is excited
to go to Chile to learn about their style of music. McPhee is new to Forman so this is his first Winterim. He feels that he has found the perfect opportunity to learn more about music: Mr. Cattey’s winterim – Chile: past and present, which features Chile’s musical culture. McPhee said “if you have a passion for something you like and you want to get into it more, take opportunities that will explore deeper into your passion” so this is it. McPhee also stated “If you have a passion, and you find out you don't like it, take other opportunities explore potential ones you may like.” John is going into this winterim with an open mind and open heart to see what he learns and becomes passionate about in Chile. |
